As it turns out, Windows Vista really wasn’t all that slow; and no, your PC probably won’t fry if you open it up without wearing a wrist strap.  Thanks in large part to the Internet, the tech world is teeming with lies, half-truths, and misinformation.  We’ve dug up some of the Web’s most notorious nuggets of conventional wisdom to see which holds up to scrutiny and which are merely urban legends.

The Claim: Vista is slower than Windows 7
Warning: Mostly true… only by about 3% slower

The Claim: All smartphones suffer signal loss from a “grip of death”
Warning: Mostly true… only seems to affect iPhone 4

The Claim: The desktop PC is dying
Warning: Dubious… laptop sales have gained ground, but there is still a place for the desktop PC

The Claim: High-priced HDMI cables make your HDTV look better
Warning: Outrageous… after many tests with many different cables, there is to discernable difference

The Claim: LCDs are better than plasma screens
Warning: Dubious… each have pros and cons that make them better for different reasons

The Claim: More bars on your cell phone means better service
Warning: Dubious… you may have a strong signal, but if the tower is overloaded with traffic, you may still have problems

The Claim: Over time, inkjet printers are much more expensive than laser printers
Warning: Outrageous… do your homework on cost per copy before you buy

The Claim: People with more monitor space are more productive
Warning: Mostly True… adding a screen can make you up to 50% more productive

The Claim: Refilled ink cartridges will ruin  your printer
Warning: Mostly True… you are best staying with genuine or good remanufactured cartridges

The Claim: Internet Explorer is less secure than other browers
Warning: Outrageous… keep your brower and all the plugins updated and you should be fine

The Claim: You’re safe if you visit only G-rated sites
Warning: Outrageous… people will plant viruses on the most visited sites, and that is usually non-porn sites
